Sabah, Sarawak Barisan MPs deny defecting tomorrow

Sabah, Sarawak Barisan MPs deny defecting tomorrow
September 5th, 2008

Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) Parliamentary Backbenchers Club chairman Datuk Anifah Aman has denied widespread speculation that some BN Members of Parliment (MPs) from Sabah would defect to the opposition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) starting from tomorrow.

“There is no such thing…no Sabah BN MPs have indicated their intention to defect,” he told Bernama here today.

Anifah, who is Kimanis MP, was asked to comment on the rumours circulating around the country through the Short-Message-Service (SMS) and the Internet that Sabah and Sarawak MPs would leave the BN within the next few days.

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was quoted as saying recently that the Sept 16 deadline for a high number of BN MPs to defect to Pakatan Rakyat remained on target.

A defection of 30 BN MPs will allow the PR coalition to take over the federal government.

Meanwhile, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) deputy president Datuk Eric Majimbun described the sms as a mere rumour meant to arouse interest in discussions of the current political situation in the country.

But, when asked about rumours that a number of Sabah BN MPs would go on abrupt vacation this weekend overseas, the Sepanggar MP confirmed receiving a call from “someone” who arranged for the group trip.

He declined to dilvuge the details of the calls and the identity of the caller, saying that “he will not be able to make it”.

“I am preoccupied with my programmes to give alms to my Muslim constituents during this Ramadan…so I need to be in my constituency,” he said.

United Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) Deputy president Datuk Wilfred Bumburing concurred that the SMS might be a rumour to confuse the people.

Bumburing said he would also be in Sabah during this weekend but kept mum about the overseas trip.

Meanwhile, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president Liew Vui Keong said if the opposition led by Anwar want to form a new government, they should do it through elections and not by claiming some BN lawmakers will join them on Sept 16.

He said that only victories through elections made a party eligible to form a government as was done by the BN that had been voted by the people through the democratic process.

“They are a party irresponsible and unhealthy by claiming that they will form a new government through the participation of BN members in the opposition.

“All these are political play acting to draw the people’s attention because in fact, they are incapable of governing a new government,” he said, adding the opposition’s move to boast the claim was irresponsible because it could create anxiety among the people and foreign investors and this could cost the country.

Liew who is Sandakan Member of Parliament was sure that none of his BN colleagues would join the opposition on Sept 16 as claimed by Anwar.

On Anwar’s suggestion for Sept 16 be declared a public holiday in the five states governed by Pakatan Rakyat to commemorate the formation of Malaysia, Liew said it was up to the coalition to make the decision.

“The five states are run by them and they have the right to make whatever decisions. What important is they do not go against the Federal Constitution,” he said.

In KUCHING, the four state BN component parties are confident that none of their MPs are likely to cross over to the PR come September 16 as they will not trade “principle for short-term gains”.

Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) President Datuk Seri Dr James Masing said today the opposition, especially Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), were mistaken if they thought BN MPs could be bought over to leave the coalition to form a new government to be led by Anwar.

“It (defection) is unlikely. I have spoken to all six PRS MPs, who are elected representatives of principles and will not trade principles for short-term gains,” Dr Masing, who is also Sarawak Land Development Minister, told Bernama here.

“As far as PRS is concerned, we are not moving anywhere. We are moving with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who is national BN chairman,” he said, adding that the opposition must respect the decision made by voters during the March 8 general election.

He said Anwar, who had earlier claimed that he would become prime minister by September 16, should respect that mandate as much as his win in the Permatang Pauh by-election on August 26 was being respected by the BN.

Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) deputy president Datuk Peter Nyarok said the party, including its four MPs, had pledged their support to the BN leadership under Abdullah at the national level and Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, the state BN chairman.

“There is no question of it (jumping ship). We do not support Anwar and will not not cross over at whatever cost,” he told Bernama, adding that SPDP stood by the BN, which won 30 out of the 31 parliamentary seats in Sarawak during the last election.

Asked if such claims were possible, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Tan Sri Dr George Chan said everyone had dreams.

“Everyone has dreams. I have dreams. He (Anwar) has dreams. It’s impossible,” said Dr Chan, who is also deputy chief minister.

SUPP, the second largest state BN partner, won six parliamentary seats but lost Bandar Kuching in the recent polls.

Sarawak BN backbone, Parti Parti Pesaka Bumiputera (PBB) vice president Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman said he was confident all of PBB’s 14 MPs and 35 state assemblymen would remain loyal to the BN.

PBB youth chief Fadillah Yusof, who is also MP for Petra Jaya, said the move by the PR to lure BN MPs to join the opposition was evidence that they did not subscribe to their own principle regarding “hak rakyat” or the people’s rights.

Fadillah, who is also deputy minister of Science, Teknology dan Innovation, said the opposition’s attempt would only bring about a negative impact that would not benefit the country as it gave an illusion of of political instability despite the prevailing stability being enjoyed by Malaysians.

Pairin kemuka usul singkir SAPP

Pairin kemuka usul singkir SAPP
Tony Thien | Jun 25, 08 3:44pm

No pressure from Sarawak BN for important posts in Cabinet

No pressure from Sarawak BN for important posts in Cabinet

KUCHING (Bernama) - The Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) government has never pressured the federal government for important posts, including the post of deputy prime minister, since joining Malaysia in 1963.

State Housing Minister Datuk Seri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak politics should not be seen in the same light as Sabah politics, as Sarawak BN stressed a policy of consultations to resolve any problem with the federal government.

"But I do not want to comment on Sabah politics. In Sarawak, there had been no trouble because whenever there was a problem with the federal government, we would not resort to an 'open war'. Instead, we negotiated to solve the problem," he told reporters here yesterday.

Johari, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) deputy president, said the Sarawak BN representatives had a certain political quality which endeared them to the people since independence.

He said there were Sabah and Sarawak politicians who aspired to become deputy prime minister, and this had been played up by the Pakatan Rakyat which promised this if it ruled the country.
"We have not been hasty (in wanting the DPM post)," he said.

On Saturday, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that some Sabah and Sarawak MPs were keen to cross over to the opposition coalition and would do so soon.

In the March 8 general election, Sarawak BN won 30 of the parliamentary seats in the state while the other seat was won by the DAP.

PBS tells Dr Chong to declare his stand

DAILY EXPRESS NEWS
PBS tells Dr Chong to declare his stand

Kota Kinabalu: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Supreme Council member Dr Chong Eng Leong has been told to declare whether he still subscribes to the Barisan Nasional (BN) principles.

PBS Chief Information Officer, Johnny Mositun, said the party's leadership was concerned with Dr Chong's recent statement that was tantamount to "belittling the party's policy as well as making unfounded allegations and malicious comments against senior party leaders".

"Our stand on illegals is clear ever since PBS was formed in 1985, long before he (Dr Chong) joined, exited and rejoined PBS. We are anti-PTI (illegal immigrants) but we must adopt a BN approach to solving the problem. Not the opposition way."

According to Mositun, if Dr Chong can no longer support the BN, then "he should know what to do rather than testing the hands of the PBS leadership".

"His statement is very damaging. Dr Chong is free to leave the party and join the opposition, Pakatan Rakyat, if he no longer subscribed to BN principles," he said here, Monday.

"Deep in our heart, in so far as the motion tabled by Lim Kit Siang in Parliament is concerned, it is the prerogative of the Speaker to either accept or reject it based on the fact or subject matter of the motion by giving its reason(s) in accordance with the House Standing Order provisions," said Mositun, who is also State Assembly Deputy Speaker.

Hence, he said, Dr Chong's contention that PBS Deputy President Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili, who is Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, got Sabah MPs to vote against the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) does not arise.

"The motion was never accepted for debate," he said.

Dr Chong was reported last Saturday as expressing disappointment with Deputy Speaker Datuk Ronald Kiandee's rejection of the motion to amend the motion of thanks to the Royal address to add the proposal for the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants in Sabah by Ipoh Timur MP, Lim Kit Siang.

At the same time, Dr Chong criticised not only Sabah BN MPs but also blamed PBS leader, Maximus whom he said failed to show support for the RCI, which he believed, if formed, would be able to solve the perennial illegal immigrant problem and those associated with it.

‘Rest assured that every Sabahan will never forget that you rejected the tabling of the motion to set up the royal commission on illegal immigrants in Sabah.’
On Kit Siang challenges speaker's ruling on Sabah motion

An Immeasurably Angry Sabahan: Dear beloved Ronald Kiandee, rest assured that every Sabahan will never forget what you did when you rejected the tabling of the motion to set up the royal commission on illegal immigrants in Sabah. You said that nobody will vote for the motion to be passed, including the Sabah BN MPs.

It is unbelievable that Sabah MPs would not vote in support for this motion. Why? What, may I ask, is your reason for not supporting this motion. Please don't give me stupid reasons such as, ‘irrelevant’, ‘unnecessary’, ‘pointless’ or other stupid arguments. The fact is you are hiding something. You prove to us that Barisan Nasional is not for Sabah.

To all the Sabah MPs, you must all feel relieved by this for you need not be put in a difficult position of voting against the motion. We will remember you. We have your names. We will not be like before where we say: ‘Apa boleh buat?’ This issue will not be put to rest. We will carry on this fight so that truth and justice prevails.

Voices by prominent toilet keepers

3 Sabah leaders quash talk of defections

By LOONG MENG YEE

KUALA LUMPUR: Three Sabah leaders have quashed talk of Barisan MPs defecting to the Pakatan Rakyat, but said that their feelings of discontent needed to be considered.

"Do not fall for any attempts to create ill-will. But we must listen to what the voters want, and deliver security and development to Sabah and Sarawak," Unity, Culture and Heritage Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal told reporters at Parliament lobby.

Asked about Umno Kalabakan MP Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh's statement that leaders from East Malaysia were given unimportant ministerial positions, Shafie, whose ministry is in charge of museums, just smiled.

"I do not deny there is unhappiness on the ground. But I am here to serve the people and what is more important, we deliver development and security to them.

"Whatever positions the Prime Minister wants to give, that is his prerogative," he said.
Echoing the view, Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said rife speculation of cross-overs was the work of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"This has happened before in Sabah, the incessant talk about hopping, it becomes an interesting subject.

"In PBRS, we have given our word to the Prime Minister that we will not defect. This hopping business is manipulative and one loses the respect of the voters," said Joseph.

Abdul Ghapur said the Prime Minister should be given until the end of the year to solve the problems in the two states.

On the issue of hopping, he pledged not to do it.

Voices near the bunglow toilet

- Salleh Kalbi (BN-Silam): "I haven't been approached. I have my own principles. BN has a proven track record but now it is time for them to realise development should not only be concentrated in the peninsula."

- Datuk Chua Soon Bui (BN-Tawau): "Any party has the right to do what they want but whether they will get any positive response remains to be seen."

- Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit (BN-Mambong): "My principles are very clear -- I will never abandon BN. It's just political manoeuvring by the opposition."

- Alexander Nanta Linggi (BN-Kapit): "This is all about integrity, and I personally feel hurt by the opposition's claims."

Kota Belud MP said offered large sum to defect

14-05-2008: Kota Belud MP said offered large sum to defect

by Kevin Tan

KUALA LUMPUR: Backbencher Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan (Kota Belud-BN) caused a stir in parliament yesterday when he alleged that he was offered a large sum of money to defect to the opposition camp.

“I’d like to ask the Speaker, is it not corruption for certain opposition leaders to offer goodies to members of parliament (MPs) to jump ship? I myself have received a call offering a large sum of money to jump ship. Is that not corruption?

“They also offered me a Cabinet position. Is that not corruption?” he said when debating the motion of thanks on the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Abdul Rahman also claimed that bribery was pervasive during the contest against the late Tun Ghafar Baba for the position of Umno deputy president, where tons of money, projects and “pink forms” were used as “grease” to secure victory.

“We in Sabah still remember how delegates (to the Umno general assembly) can be bought and threatened. Thanks to the supreme leader of PKR (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) for introducing and turning money politics into a culture in Umno Sabah,” he said.

He also teased the Pakatan Rakyat on who would succeed Anwar if he became the next prime minister, claiming that his constituents were pressing him on the matter.

“Who will become the next prime minister after Anwar? The people want to know? Can Pakatan Rakyat continue to surprise and create history by appointing the first prime minister from among the Chinese and Indians — (for example) the honourable MPs from Ipoh Timur (Lim Kit Siang) or Bukit Gelugor (Karpal Singh) from the DAP. We will wait…” he said.

Abdul Rahman also questioned whether Pakatan would allow PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang to become prime minister.

“With his turban and robe ala Taliban, he is said to be unsuitable to hold the prime minister’s position as he can give the wrong image of Malaysia to foreign investors,” he said, adding that even non-Malays in Malaysia would be concerned if Hadi became either home or education minister.

He also asked whether PKR president and opposition Leader Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, whom he characterised as a puppet and warming the seat for Anwar, could become a prime minister.

Taking a swipe at Mohamed Azmin Ali (Gombak-PKR), Abdul Rahman said the PKR vice-president was so obsessed with his leader to the point of following Anwar’s style of clothing and speaking.

He ended his speech by saying Anwar was building an empire of nepotism and would appoint his daughter, Nurul Izzah (Lembah Pantai-PKR), to succeed him as prime minister.
